Cannabis was reintroduced into Europe in 1842 for the treatment of rheumatism, asthma, muscle spasm and pain. During this century it has been removed from medical practice and is an illegal substance due to its well known CNS effects. Recently, pressure has grown for the use of cannabis as a therapy once again. Recent work on the pharmacology of cannabis together with its medicinal chemistry will be reviewed here.
