Background This study compared caries inhibitory effect of nano silver varnish versus tri calcium phosphate (TCP) varnish among children with visual impairment regarding Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus , salivary pH and immunoglobulin A (IgA). Patients and method Sixty visually impaired children were randomly divided into three equal treatment groups: group I received nano silver fluoride (NSF) varnish and oral health education, group II received TCP varnish and oral health education, and group III received oral health education. Salivary parameters were assessed at baseline, 1 day, 3, and 6 months after the start of the study. Results Both NSF varnish and TCP varnishes resulted in S. mutans and lactobacillus count decrease, salivary pH increase, and IgA elevation that lasted until the end of 6 months. On the other hand, health education resulted in delayed salivary pH increase and bacterial count reduction only after 3 and 6 months with no effect on salivary IgA. Conclusion Both NSF varnish and TCP varnish had significant caries inhibitory capacity among visually impaired children that lasted until the end of 6 months after application.
