A deduction is made of a relation between the work function of a metal and the potential of the metal (functioning as an electrode) in solution, at zero charge, is derived. The deduction is consistent with the value of the surface potential of water attached to mercury of 0.20 ± 0.11 V. The absolute potential difference across a hypothetical Na–Na+ electrode is calculated to be − 1.24 V.
