Optical second harmonic intensity from Ni(110) has been measured as a function of CO exposure, temperature, and excitation wavelength and compared with similar experiments on Ni(111). Second harmonic generation from Ni(110) is much weaker than from Ni(111); there is little or no azimuthal dependence of the second harmonic intensity; and the effect of CO on the second harmonic intensity is much less than for Ni(111). These observations are explained in terms of the unoccupied electronic levels of the two surfaces.
