An overview of calculations of the linear density response at a metal surface needed to determine the Feibelman d -parameters is given. Examples are presented from the whole spectrum of theoretical models that have been used and are being developed for such calculations. The aim is to compare different approaches with regard to both physical content and technical difficulty. The dependence of the d -parameters on frequency is presented for several cases and the distinct structures that appear are given a physical basis. The particular case of an extra surface collective mode is discussed at length.
