Urginea indica (Roxb.) Kunth (Liliaceae), known as Indian squill, is a good substitute for the Mediterranean squill (U. maritima (L.) Baker), used world wide as a cardiac drug. The cardiac gycoside obtained from U. indica (Roxb.) Kunth is similar to scillarens, A and B of the Mediterranean squill with very little difference. The taxonomy, distribution, and ecology of the plant and the anatomy of its bulb have been studied. The economic potentiality of U. indica (Roxb.) Kunth can be increased by proper cultivation.
