The axial dispersion of a nondiffusing dye in water during pure oscillatory flow (zero mean flow) in a five-generation branching tube network has been studied experimentally. The influence of stroke volume and frequency on an effective network dispersion coefficient has been determined for a range of conditions embracing both normal respiration and high-frequency ventilation in human lungs. The oscillatory convective dispersion mechanism results in large dispersion coefficients (on the order of 100–1000 cm2/s for human respiration conditions) with relatively strong dependence on the Reynolds number and weak dependence on the unsteadiness parameter.
