In isolated respiratory multienzyme complexes of beef heart mitochondria the b ‐type cytochromes can be photoreduced in presence of flavin via the superoxide anion. O ‐ 2 does not reduce cytochrome c 1 . In an anaerobic system, FMNH 2 formed by irradiation with blue light in presence of EDTA reduces cytochromes b and c 1 The possible implication of O ‐ 2 in the electron transfer from flavin/flavoprotein to cytochrome b in blue light‐controlled biological processes is discussed.
