Taxonomy is the science of systematic classification of living or fossilized organisms. Classification is the orderly arrangement of the categories into which related groups (taxa) may be divided or amalgamated. The names of these groups are governed by the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. This contribution is not concerned with the higher divisions of classification. All genera of fungi. unless they are monotypic. have frayed edges; that is. they merge into related genera so that it is often a matter of opinion in which genus an intermediate species should be placed. In this respect, the limits of Fusarium are more homogenous than many other common genera. Any problems that exist in Fusarium taxonomy apply at species or subspecies level and may be considered under two quite distinct headings: (a) the problem relating to the correct application of the name, and (b) the problems of assign ing a collection or isolate to its correct taxon, be it species, variety, or forma specialis.
