By means of the magneto-optical Faraday effect the spatial magnetic flux density distribution is investigated at the surface of High- T c -superconductors possessing different microstructure and geometry. In external fields a homogeneous flux front is observed in films and in single crystals whereas in sintered samples the properties of the grain boundary phase and the single grains determine the flux distribution. In particular calculations of the field distribution in dependence of the sample thickness and geometry explain the observed flux distribution and yield the critical current density.
