An analysis of the working of a practical vibrating Kelvin condensor is presented that allows one to define an interelectrode distance for which spurious currents are negligible. A very simple method of measuring and controlling this distance is proposed, leading to an autonomous and reliable probe, suitable for topographic work function studies. Examples of applications are given.
