:The volatile constituents of Achillea wilhelmsii, Achillea eriophora and Achillea vermicularis were analyzed by headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and also by hydrodistillation gas chromatography mass spectrometry (HD-GC-MS). Fifty-four and sixty-three compounds were identified in the HS and essential oil (EO) of the plants, among which the oxygenated monoterpenes, sabinol (47.3±0.8 %; 32.0 %) in A. wilhelmsii and camphor in A. eriophora (36.5±3.8%; 38.6 %) and A. vermicularis (35.0±8.8 %; 35.0 %) were the major constituents respectively. The HS and EO of A. eriophora and A. wilhelmsii were rich also in monoterpene hydrocarbons: camphene (9.3±1.1 %, 9.9 % and 2.2±1.6 %, 6.1 %) and sabinene (5.9±1.5 %, 1.6 % and 1.5± 0.2%, 1.8 %) respectively. 1,8-cineole was the most abundant component in all of the above plants constituting (9.7±0.5, 25.8±2.1 % and 22.0±6.3 %) in the HS and (2.5, 28.3 and 15.8 %) in the EO of A. wilhelmsii, A. eriophora and A. vermicularis respectively. A. wilhelmsii (17.6±0.5 %, 1.5 %) and A. eriophora (6.1±3.8 %, 3.8 %) were similar in having bornyl acetate as their major constituents while germacrene D (22.2±2.3 %, 14.4 %) was the only major sesquiterpenes detected in the HS and EO of A. vermicularis. The present study showed that the results of HS-SPME GC-MS analysis which is a non-destructive mild method are compatible with those obtained by HD-GC-MS for the essential oils of the Iranian yarrows.
