TFTR is expected to produce approximately 5 MW of alpha heating during the D/T Q ≈ 1 phase of operation in 1989–1990. At that point the collective confinement properties and the heating effects of alpha particles become accessible to study for the first time. This paper outlines the potential performance of TFTR with respect to alpha particle production, the diagnostics which will be available for alpha particle measurements, and the physics issues which can be studied both before and during D/T operation.
