Beleuchten eines mechanischen Ereignisses: Filme eines Polymer-Rotaxan-Konjugats wurden auf Quarzplättchen gegossen und mit Aluminiummasken bedeckt; die nichtabgedeckten Flächen wurden DMSO-Dampf ausgesetzt. Das Lösungsmittel bewirkt eine Änderung der Position des Makrocyclus im molekularen Shuttle, die „An“-Zustände der Rotaxanfluoreszenz in den nichtabgedeckten Flächen zur Folge hat (siehe Bild).
