Current dietary habits and dietary barriers were examined among 83 persons with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) who had previous diabetes self-management training through an outpatient program (52% response rate). Factor patterns of dietary barriers included emotional adjustment to the diabetic diet (“personally difficult”), problems with food selection (“foods difficult”), and difficulties with meal planning (“control issues”). Higher scores on all three factor patterns correlated with infrequently following the diabetic meal plan at home. Results may assist diabetes educators in helping persons with NIDDM overcome barriers to treatment and improve outcomes.
