ARADOXICALLY, in spite of the rich blood P supply of the lungs, vascular tumors of these organs are rare, and exceedingly so are circumscribed tumors appearing as "coin" lesions.Such tumors were found in the following two patients and in a small number of patients reported in the literature. CASE REPORTSCase 1. H.S., an 18-year-old young woman, had had, since the age of 12, recurrent, fluctuant, tender, blood-filled swellings on her left upper arm that required repeated aspirations and excisions. With each reappearance of the swellings, there was likely to be a prodromal period of vague abdominal complaints and occasionally vomiting and anorexia. At the time of the patient's last operation, on Nov. 8, 1951, the humerus showed signs of erosion, but at no time was any evidence of tumor found. Her postoperative course was unremarkable, except for a transient period of numbness and inability to move the fingers.Biopsy of the excised specimens revealed hemangoma. In conjunction with the aspirations of the blood-filled swellings, the patient had received courses of radiotherapy. At no time had lesions similar to those removed been found in any other part of the body, and repeated chest roentgenograms, the last having been taken in May, 1951, had failed to reveal any abnormalities.A follow-up examination on Jan. 27, 1955.revealed an increase in the size of the tumor on the arm.On Jan. 22, 1956, the patient was re-examined; at this time the left arm functioned well exce t for limitation of full exther increased in size. The results of various laboratory tests, including determination of bleeding and clotting time, and prothrombin and chemical analyses, were all within normal limits.tension of the el E ow.The mass had not fur-From the Pulmonary, Surgical, and Laboratory divisions, Montetiore Hospital, New York, N.Y.
