In adult Zoarces three different hemoglobin types were found, when analysed in starch gel electrophoresis. In fetuses three hemoglobin types were also seen, but they were different from the adult types. By mother-offspring analysis it was shown that the variation both in adult and in fetal hemoglobins is due to the same locus with two codominant alleles. A relatively fast ontogenetic change from fetal to adult hemoglobin, completed in about six months, was observed in both aquarium and nature.
