Electrophoretic enzyme patterns and breeding experiments in Danish mudsnails (Hydrobiidae)

An electrophoretic survey of seven enzyme systems in the three species of Hydrobia found in inner Danish waters revealed distinct species-characteristic differences. Breeding experiments yielded viable offspring only in within-species crossings. These results confirm that the Danish Hydrobia fauna is comprised of three valid, intersterile species, Hydrobia ulvae, H. neglecta and H. ventrosa.
