Monolayers and multilayers of Xe were prepared on a leadlike Ni(111) 7×{}7 Pb surface. With use of synchrotron radiation, angle-resolved uv photoelectron spectra were measured from the 5p valence and 4d core levels as well as from the NOO Auger transition. The work function was also measured for each adlayer. The 5p, 4d, and NOO energies differ for the first-, second-, and higher-order Xe layer but no Xe-induced work-function changes were found. For this surface the experiment clearly demonstrates that changes in final-state screening alone cause the distance-dependent shifts and that in general they must make a significant contribution.
