Methacryloyloxyalkylisothiuronium salts were synthesized as precursors to polymers with pendant thiol groups. As indicated by potentiometric titration and polarography, thiol is generated from the monomers and their polymers by treatment with base. However, in some cases subsequent reactions consume the thiol formed. The rates at which thiol is generated and consumed are discussed in terms of chemical structure.
