We outline some misconceptions and methodological deficiencies presented in the comparison of four types of aeolian saltation sensors. Specifically, we clarify the sampling area, operation, and response of the sensors and comment on the methodological challenges for field-based sensor comparisons. The goal of this discussion is to clarify some inconsistencies that may influence the selection of one sensor over another in future research. Indirectly, we hope to highlight research needs and improve the reliability of aeolian transport measurements.
