We have measured the mean lifetime of four excited states in Fe I using the Hanle effect (zero- field level crossing). Our results, which employ LS g-factors to extract the mean lifetime, are: Level A (A) Mean Lifetime (ns) y 5D4 3020 6.46 + 0.32 z 5F5 3720 63.2 i 3.6 z 5F4 3737 63.3 + 3.8 z 5D4 3860 74.6 + 4.7 The results for the y 5D4 and z 5F5 levels are in agreement with previous measurements by electron bombardment excitation and optical double resonance. The z `F4 value corrects a previously reported value and the z 5D4 lifetime is reported for the first time. Oscillator strengths derived from the lifetime measurements are compared with others in the recent literature. Subject heading: transition probabilities
