Compounds of the type (RE)2/3Pb1/3MnO3, with RE=La3+, Pr3+ and Nd3+, were grown as single crystals several mm on a side from molten flux by a slow cooling. X-ray studies showed the materials to be nearly cubic perovskites with a0∼3.9 Å. These compounds are soft ferromagnets with magnetizations of 70–80 emu/g at 55°K. The lanthanum compound has a Curie temperature of 330°K, but Tc can be lowered by as much as 150° by introduction of unpaired 4f spins via Pr3+ and Nd3+. There appears to be a negative coupling between the Nd3+ or Pr3+ and the Mn ions, although the resultant magnetization at 55°K does not reflect a completely antiferromagnetic configuration of moments.
