Using a level-crossing technique, the lifetimes of the states 3d 10 4p 2 P 3/2 , 3d 9 (4s4p)( 3 P) 4 P 3/2 , ( 3 P) 4 D 3/2 , ( 3 P) 2 P 3/2 and ( 3 P) 2 D 3/2 of Cu I have been measured. From these values absolute oscillator strengths are deduced, taking into account the decays to the metastable states 3d 9 4s 2 2 D 3/2,5/2 . In order to calculate the f values with the aid of known eigenfunctions, the corresponding dipole matrix elements are reduced to the radial integrals <4s||r||4p> and <3d||r||4p> by conventional tensor algebra. These integrals are determined by the independent methods of Coulomb approximation, atomic Fues potential, scaled Thomas-Fermi potential and the parametric potential.
