For example, at King County Hospital during the years 1960-61, the over-all incidence of Gram-negative bacteremia was greater than the combined incidence of bacteremia associated with the pneumococcus, staphylococcus, and streptococcus. The response of Gram-negative infections to antimicrobial therapy frequently has been unsatisfactory. While the outcome of these infections is often determined primarily by the patients' underlying disease rather than by the therapeutic regimen, antimicrobials remain the cornerstone of therapy. Therefore, a practical method of determining antimicrobial susceptibility of...References1. ROGERS DE: The changing pattern of life-threatening microbial disease. New Engl. J. Med. 261: 677, 1959.
