Changes in renal function following local X irradiation of one kidney in the pig with one, six or 30 dose fractions have been studied up to six months after treatment by 131I Hippuran renography. The doses used were based on 70 per cent of the “skin tolerance” NSD of 1,800 rets, and doses above and below this value were given. Dose levels of 1,260 rads single dose and 1,050 rets for fractionated treatments approximated renal tolerance for single doses and fractions in 30f/39d but not for 6f/18 days. The renal tolerance for the six fraction treatment was 30–45 per cent lower than in the other two treatment groups. The widely differing partial tolerance doses observed in this study infer that the NSD system cannot be applied to predict the variation in radiation dose with dose fractionation which produces equivalent damage to the kidney.
