The frequency of congenital abnormalities in the lumbo-sacral spine was radiographically examined in a series of 500 laminectomies for disc protrusions, and in 500 normal spines. The last few years have seen a considerable advance in our knowledge of spinal disc pathology; they call for a re-assessment of the significance of congenital abnormalities. It is suggested that congenital lumbo-sacral abnormalities are a predisposing factor for disc protrusions.
