The operations which have to be performed to convert measured light‐scattering data to estimates of molecular weight and size are considered. It is shown that the estimate of the root‐mean‐square chain length can be seriously in error if account is not taken of the effect of molecular weight heterogeneity upon the particle scattering factor. The Zimm method is applied to data from an instrument with three angles of observation only, and the estimates so obtained are compared with those obtained using the dissymmetry method. Points of actual experimental procedure are discussed together with the method of absolute calibration. A complete set of data for polystyrene in toluene is given.
