This paper states what has been learnt from twelve years' detailed observation and from records made over a much longer period on the African Alpine Bamboo ( Arundinaria alpina K. Schum) in Kenya, where it grows gregariously over 700 square miles of montane forest between 8,000 and 10,000 feet above sea level. A single acre holds 4,000 to 7,000 culms, of average size 45-50 feet high and inches diameter.
