The surface dipole barrier of simple and transition metals up to atomic number 50 is calculated by a simple scheme using only parameters of the bulk band structure. Good agreement with semiempirical values is reached and the trend over the 3d and 4d series is explained. The results prove that the charge density of surface atoms can be derived from bulk atoms, but not from free atoms.
