Collisional ionisation of the rubidium 9S state with other rubidium atoms is presented for the first time. The formation of atomic and molecular ions is analysed using a mass spectrometer. The associative ionisation cross section deduced from the experimental results (7.4*10 -15 cm 2 ) is in good agreement with the calculations of Janev. Some information on the possible mechanisms of production of the atomic ion Rb + is also reported.
