The polarization dependence has been calculated for the allowed, indirect, phonon assisted two‐photon transitions L 3 → Γ 1 and Σ 4 → Γ 1 which are most important in the case of AgCl. The polarization dependence of the two‐photon absorption of ruby laser light in AgCl single crystals has been measured and found to belong to the E g symmetry of the point group O h . Comparison with the presented theory leads to the conclusion that the Σ 4 → Γ 1 transition with participation of the Σ 1 phonon takes place.
