In this essay, I suggest that it might be fruitful to consider the notion of stakeholders from the perspective of consent-theory. Neither talk about stakeholders perse nor, particularly, talk about consent-theory is itself novel. However, I believe that the suggestion that consent-theory can shed some light on the position of stakeholders does provide something new, as does the suggestion that what I shall call putative consent and future-oriented consent both have important roles to play in discussions of stakeholders.
