Conversation analysis uncovers how tour guides use prefaces and embodied cues to secure visitor attention before extended explanations, highlighting the role of joint orientation.
This study examines the steps tour guides take to initiate and launch extended-informing sequences during tours conducted in English as a common language. Drawing on 20 hr of data from tours in Asia and Europe, employing the method of conversation analysis, we analyse the routinised steps and embodied resources guides employ to introduce extended talk on cultural artefacts. Guides carefully monitored visitor movement and orientation, using prefaces to postpone launching extended explanations until visitors were disposed to attend. The findings underscore the significance of achieving joint attention prior to launching extended talk that links artefacts to culture in intercultural communication.
