The ultrastructure and differentiation of oil idioblasts were studied in several Liriodendron tulipifera organs. Secretory cells developed early during ontogenesis of both vegetative and reproductive structures. The main structural events in the oil cell differentiation were the deposition of a suberized layer inside the outer cellulosic wall and the formation of the cupule, a localized cell wall protuberance, to which the oil sac is attached. The finding by transmission electron microscopy of both the suberized layer and cupule in L. tulipifera indicates a unified model of oil cell ultrastructure within the Magnoliaceae, despite previous conflicting reports.
