Single, multiphasic mechanisms located in the plasmalemma and the tonoplast are proposed to mediate ion uptake in cells of higher plants. There are no parallel uptake mechanisms and, normally, little or no free diffusion across the plasmalemma. The plasmalemma controls the rate of uptake at low external salt concentrations, while the tonoplast may become rate‐limiting at high concentrations.
