The testis of a gonadotropin-stimulated stallion was perfused with horse blood containing sodium acetate-1-C14 for 24 hours. The neutral lipide fraction (with the aid of carrier steroids) on fractionation and purification by conventional methods including chromatography on paper, crystallization and formation of derivatives, yielded the following radiochemically pure substances: 4-androstene-3,17-dione, testosterone, progesterone and 17-hydroxyprogesterone. llβ-Hydroxy-4-androstene-3,17-dione, added as carrier, was isolated devoid of radioactivity, signifying its absence in normal testis tissue. The high level of isotope incorporated into the above steroids is interpreted as reflecting a relatively great steroidogenic capacity of stallion testis tissue.
