The spin-wave gap of ferromagnetic rare earths is expressed directly in terms of measurable anisotropy and magnetostriction constants, leading to more reliable interpretation of ferromagnetic resonance and neutron scattering data than hitherto. The anomalously large gap observed by Nicklow et al and Marsh and Sievers for Dy remain unexplained.
