The paramagnetic spectra of Gd 3+ and Fe 3+ in monoclinic zirconia single crystals have been investigated in the Q-band. In both cases a unique type of defect was observed, thus confirming that the trivalent ion has no O 2- vacancy in nearest-neighbour positions. The spectra were fitted to the most general spin hamiltonian the constants of which were obtained for both ions. Analysing the pseudosymmetry of the fourth-order terms of the crystal field, it was found that Fe 3+ did not modify its immediate environment and that the Gd 3+ local symmetry developed is very close to that of the tetragonal ZrO 2 lattice.
