With cuttings excised from balsam hypocotyls an analysis was made of the quantitative relations between IAA‐ like substances and the presence of naturally occuring phenolic compounds. Results suggest that accumulation of the auxin‐induced roots is a result of an enhanced biosynthesis of phenolic compounds which are inhibitors of the IAA‐ oxidizing enzyme.
