Dexmedetomidine provided effective sedation without respiratory depression or the need for intubation during transesophageal echocardiography for percutaneous atrial septal defect closure.
Case Report (n=1)
No
Dexmedetomidine may be a feasible option for sedation during transesophageal echocardiography for percutaneous atrial septal defect closure in adults.
May warrant consideration for sedation in TEE-guided ASD closure; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective validation.
Atrial septal defect (ASD) is second common congenital heart disease that often leads to adult period. Intracardiac or transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is essential for percutaneous closure of ASD using Amplatzer septal occluder. Dexmedetomidine (DEX), which is a highly selective ?2-agonist, has sedative and analgesic properties without respiratory depression in the clinical dose range. We report percutaneous closure of ASD with TEE under DEX sedation.doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.12669/pjms.296.3616How to cite this:Jung JW, Go GC, Jeon SY, Bang S, Lee KH, Kim YH, et al. Jung et al. (2013) conducted a case report in Atrial septal defect (n=1). Dexmedetomidine was evaluated on Successful closure of ASD without intubation and stable hemodynamics/respiration. Dexmedetomidine provided effective sedation without respiratory depression or the need for intubation during transesophageal echocardiography for percutaneous atrial septal defect closure.
