Electrodeposition of dendrimers containing redox-active tetrathiafulvalene units and coordinating crown ether moieties provides a novel strategy for producing modified electrodes that respond to the presence of a particular metal cation. Application of the third-generation dendrimer (see schematic diagram) to platinum gave an electrode whose first oxidation potential is a function of Ba2+ concentration in the range (1–8)×10−4 M.
