A relatively simple, rapid, and reliable method for the determination of the surface area of clays has been developed. The liquid‐phase adsorption of stearic acid, a surface active agent which under the proper conditions forms a unimolecular layer of orientated molecules on the solid surface, was employed. The method should be of value in making predictions regarding properties such as total adsorptivity, coloring power, and catalytic activity.
