The factors which influence wear in textiles are considered in detail in this paper and relevant mechanical properties are defined. The relative importance of fibre properties, fabric construction and finishing treatments in abrasion resistance, pilling and snagging are discussed and laboratory and field tests for garments and carpets are compared.
