Positron lifetime measurements on the mechanically alloyed Fe60Cu40 system with different milling times are reported for the first time. Anomalous changes of the positron lifetime of samples milled for 40 to 80 h are observed, which result from the alloying effect. The sample with 160 h ball milling is found to be a nanometer-sized (11 nm) alloy. The positron lifetime measurement for the 160 h milled sample shows that there exist two kinds of defects in the interface region of the nanometer-sized alloy. One consists of free volumes with a size not larger than that of a single vacancy in the core of the grain boundaries. The other is the aggregation of free volumes with a size of about ten and more vacancies at grain boundary triple junctions.
