Measurements are presented of the statistics of the energy distribution between the longitudinal modes of a miniature TEA CO 2 laser. Correlations exist between the fluctuations on different modes, on account of competition for the limited available excitation energy. The fluctuations on each mode are characteristic of the effects of quantum fluctuations in the radiation in the mode early in the pulse while the laser is near threshold.
