Pulsed laser studies and phosphorimetry have been used to investigate the reaction of O2 and methyl viologen with the triplet excited state of tetramethylbenzidene in cellophane. Small amounts of water markedly affect the photoinduced reactions. In the case of methyl viologen, electron transfer via tunnelling is observed to give reduced methyl viologen.
