A flexible modular program system for the synthesis of optimal energy recovery networks is described. Process networks are generated to meet both stream temperature and pressure specifications. The system makes use of a price based decomposition algorithm for sub‐process integration. It incorporates heuristic decision making and employs a “branch and bound” combinatorial technique for optimization of network configuration. The ability of the system to generate very realistic process designs is demonstrated by its application to the design of an energy recovery system for an ethylene plant with its associated refrigeration facility.
