Summary Exclusion from school has recently become a subject of increased national interest. However, objective data as to the extent of the problem has not been readily available. The present paper is a summary of a three‐year longitudinal study of exclusions in one large local authority. Data is presented showing that for each year there has been an increase in the numbers of pupils excluded. Further analysis indicates, however, that it is a small number of schools which account for the majority of exclusions, indicating that school factors may be a more significant predictor of pupil exclusion than the actual behaviour of the pupils.
