Pronethalol has been shown to have a highly specific blocking action on sympathetic P-receptors (Black & Stephenson, 1962). It should therefore provide an ideal physiological tool to block sympathetic nerves to the heart whilst leaving other pathways intact. How- ever, the experiments described in this paper showed that pronethalol completely prevented the change in heart rate associated with the occlusion of the carotid arteries and may there- fore have effects on reflex changes occurring through parasympathetic as well as sympathetic pathways.
